Presentation of the domain and its history
Artisan of the vine for 5 generations, the Godmé family cultivates a vineyard in the heart of Reims mountain, in three villages classified Grand Cru (Verzenay, Verzy), and two others classified Premier Cru (Villers-Marmery, Villedommande).
Passionate, attentive to our land proud to remain an independent hous, we perpetuate the tradition of our grandparents Joseph and Pierre who vinified their grapes around the 1930s to develop champagnes of character which draw their harmonies from the blend on wines from the three Champagne grape varieties.
I joined the domain of my parents in 1978 and first of all, found my place by respecting thier know-how and then by evaluating for myself the results of different cultural practices.
The observation of the soil made me realize in the 1990s, the exceptional strengths and typicality that from the fragmentation and uniqueness of our plots depending on thier location and their exposure.
I resume the practice of winter plowing to preserve and maintain the life of the soil and do throughout the year from 2003 by adopting a natural grass cover on all my plots. Following numerous tests, the chemical treatments were subscribed in 2006 to apply only preparations based on plants and mineral salts. I embarked on a certification process in Organic viticulture in 2010 and then in Biodynamics in 2011.
Recently joined by their daughter, Lucille, Dominique and Hugues vinify and market directly a harvest of 7.5 ha and will be happy to receive you, by appointment preferably, to share their passion.
The winemaker's philosophy
The care and rigor adapted to each plot according the rythm of the seasons, brings the quintessence of the grapes and reveals the specific expression of the grape variety and the terroir. So at the harvest, I distinguish my vines according to their age, their exposure, thier soil and subsoil. The grapes, from eighty differents plots from 3 to 80 years old, are harvested at optimum maturity, sorted manually, and pressed at the property. I prefer natural yeasts, no finig, little sulphites for vinifications which are made in small vats or in oak barrels in order to obtain a subtle balance between power, complexity and elegance.
Each harvest gives birth to the creation of seven to ten champagnes composed of one, two or three Champagne grape varieties, and assembled over several years to guarantee constant quality. Only exceptional years will be vintage to retain their original authenticity. Our cellars, full of chalk, allow the aging of our cuvées, from thirty months to more than the harmony and balance found in our vines are expressed, without constraints, in our champagnes.
