Presentation of the area and its history
The Avignonesi estate is located in the south-east of Tuscany, in the regions of Montepulciano and Cortona.
Founded in 1974 by Ettore Falvo and named after his in-laws Avignonesi, whose vines he had bought in Montepulciano, Avignonesi was taken over in 2009 by Virginie Saverys, who transformed the estate into organic and biodynamic viticulture.
Today Avignonesi has 175 hectares of vines, on the Montepulciano and Cortona appellations. All wines are produced with grapes grown on the estate. Since the 2016 vintage, the entire estate has been certified organic. The wines have also been certified biodynamic since the 2019 harvest under the Biodyvin label.
In addition to viticulture, Avignonesi cultivates food crops to supply its restaurant, makes its compost, raises honey bees, produces olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Since the spring of 2018, an emerging flock of sheep has been growing year by year. This holistic and regenerative agriculture revolves aroun soil health, the integration of local flora and fauna and biodiversity.
Winemaker's philosophy
Nature can be capricious, but it is never ungrateful. Avignonesi does not cheat with nature.
Like any self-respecting winery, Avignonesi strives for excellence and quality, with the conviction that this can only be achieved while respecting nature. Virginie and the Avignonesi team believe that a wine can only be great if it is true.
Avignonesi strives to revive to its soils, its plants, its workers, its biodiversity, its customers and ultimately our planet. So, we reject synthetic products, and we limit ourselves to a minimal intervention in the cellar.
We endeavour to be a modern estate, managed by an international team (biodiversity is not limited to the vineyards) with only one concern : make sure that for each vintage we make the best possible wine that truly mirrors the conditions that surround us; climate, soil, grape varieties and our style.
