Château Romanin

At the heart of historical Provence, Château Romanin is the gem of the Baux-de-Provence PDO, with its vineyard and olive grove, located on the northern slope of the Alpilles. The estate stretches over 250 hectares, including 58 hectares of vineyard, 4.5 hectares of olive trees and 2.5 hectares of almond trees. Since its creation in 1988, Château Romanin has been producing exceptional wines, following biodynamics cahiers des charges rigorously. Fruit of the soil, the sun and the moon, the estate combines elegance and taste.

Philosophy of the vine

In 2006, Anne-Marie and Jean-Louis Charmolüe, visiting Provence on a regular basis, came across the remarkable site of Château Romanin: it was love at first sight. Former owners of Château Montrose (Second Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux), they took up a dual challenge: to write a new chapter in the history of Château Romanin and produce exceptional wines. The area was renowned since Greek times with the famous Theopolis wine.
The couple embarked upon a journey combining the precision and high standards inherent to the most prestigious vineyards. The perfect balance was achieved for red, white and rosé wines, which express the typicity of the soil and microclimate of the Alpilles, deep and full-bodied, olive oils with typical Provence aromas, as well as a Marc de Provence brandy revealing its aromatic complexity. With ruins of a 13th century castle overlooking the vineyard, the wines of Château Romanin mature in a Cathedral-Cellar, dug inside the rock of the Alpilles mountains.
Today, Anne-Marie Charmolüe, owner and manager of Château Romanin, driven by her passion and sense of duty, carries on this quest for excellence.

Philosophy of the winemaker

The winery produces 45% of red wines, 40% of rosés and 15% of white wines. Noble and expressive red grape varieties are used: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Counoise. White grape varieties, Vermentino and Roussanne were already present on the estate; white Grenache and Clairette were added and allowed Château Romanin to acquire the Baux-de-Provence PDO certification for white wines.
Château Romanin has been using biodynamics for more than thirty years. It follows the rigorous cahiers des charges of Demeter for its red wines, and Biodyvin for its reds, whites and rosés.
The vineyard is conducted in accordance with biodynamic principles, without chemical weed killers, but rather with preparations based on plants and minerals, bouillie bordelaise, sulphur, horsetail and valerian decoctions.
The geological configuration of the estate, combined with exceptional updraughts, provides depth and distinction to the red, white and rosé wines. Pebbles store the heat during the day, and restore it to the vines at night, while the Mistral contributes to cooling the vines. These phenomena allow the wines to reach pleasant maturities, ideal for achieving a balance between generosity and vivacity.
Once again, elements unite in harmony. They provide unique phenomena, which contribute to the exceptional nature of the wines and olive oils, fruit of the soil, the sun, the moon, and the work of men.
